Well
it’s the independence day time here in the uncharted backwaters
called Sri Lanka. Unlike in civilised nations here on earth, people
here tend to celebrate servitude and regression into barbarism with
some unsettling fervour. I quite do not understand why, or how, but
it is just there. Each day I hear their voices calling for
compensation for deeds committed during the times of empire, how bad
it was, and so forth. Yet they forget they have now created a bloody
violent society which has brutally killed more than one hundred
thousand people - this is just the figure for the two Sinhalese
uprisings since independence. When you add the terrorism body count,
it is said to double the figure. And that is just a conservative
estimate.
I
have not yet found even a scrap of evidence to suggest that the
British had run a lawless society here during their times. Neither
have I found any scrap of evidence to suggest that their officials or
politicians (such as the Governor) here were corrupted, or committed
rape, or abduction and murder. Nor is there any evidence to suggest
they interfered with free press or verbalisation of opposition. Oh,
and we could leave out land grab that is ongoing in here right now.
Most shameless deed in the modern history of any country with so
called democracy. Oh, I know that Mr Mugabe is doing just that in
Zimbabwe – but that is a wholly different scenario. And please
don't harp on the perceived injustice (of the British) during Barren
Land Ordinance of 1834 – which accordingly to my understanding was
to grab unoccupied forest lands or uncultivated lands. Correct me if
I am wrong, but the rural folks DID NOT OWN ANY LANDS then and there
was no deeds to them (another tool of civilisation donated by Western
governance). Barren Land Ordinance did not take cultivated
land and set people starving - they would not have starved as their
major source of sustenance was mother nature herself, the wild fruits
and game, water from the streams, all in abundance. It is still the
same in some areas.
OK,
let us say the British were most unfair and unjustifiable in their
approach and treatment towards the locals here. Let us also agree
that they were barbaric to the point of being Satans. Fine. Did they
abduct and tortured people from their homes and then killed them
without due process (of law)? Did they grab young women by force and
rape them or brought them to be prostituted? Or how about the numbers
they actually killed during uprisings? Were the British judges (even
150 years ago) corrupted to the core and raped girls/wives of people
who come before them? Or did the English judges take bribes to
pervert the course of justice?
I
do know that more than a century ago, the folks were much different
to those of us who are around today. And their values and
sensibilities and sensitivities were also quite different. Yet, they
are (or rather were) a class apart from what we find here today.
Anyone who wants to doubt this statement can verify the facts for
themselves by taking a peek at the legal system and quality of judges
and the lawyers here. We have a court system which is internationally
condemned and of epic proportions of disrepute. It is even soooo
fucked up with the folks here that people are throwing shit at the
judges on bench. This is apart from what people like Victor Ivan has
to say about their deeds. Unbelievably comic and tragic show-trials
take place every month, bribery is deeply rooted in the judicial
system, and legal professionals are worse than the judges.
No,
I am not going to talk about politicians here. I do pity them. And I
somewhat pity the people on the bench too.
But
my sole question is this. You have created a violent society driven
by greed and corruption. You have eroded your rights and you have
committed despicable acts of crime beyond human belief. You have
turned this place into an inferno on Earth. It is lawless, corrupted,
miserable, and burdened with debts (which you repay at the cost of
humanity) – your children are malnourished and do not have proper
health or educational facilities, or the protection of rule of law
for that matter, nor the freedoms and other privileges such as
freedom of speech or conscience. This is the fucked up society you
have created with your 66 years of independence.
Let
me ask the populace of this land, this despicable nation which is a
bane on the face of Earth, what is it you are so proud of or happy
about to celebrate on 4th of February? In my own humble
opinion, it is a nation of barbaric beasts with such abhorrent record
of self-governance, this particular day ought to be condemned through
a UN decree as a day of mourning, for on this day fell the darkness
upon a historic island nation who later committed acts of idiocy and
repugnance that would be a shame to whole of humanity. Period.
